Coding Required

Thinking Is the New Coding

2025-12-122 min read

AI coding agents like Claude Code and Codex are changing what matters in hiring.

The need for manual coding is shrinking. The need for thinking is growing. When we evaluate candidates now, we're not watching them type. We're watching them think.

How quickly can they gather information? How fast can they assemble a solution? Can they spot the problem before it becomes a bug? Do they see the flow of logic, the shape of the algorithm?

Once they've done all that thinking, they can use whatever AI agent they like to generate the code. We don't care. But when they submit that code, their name is on it. Their reputation. Their responsibility.

A carpenter doesn't get to blame the nail gun when the deck collapses. The tool drove the nails, sure. But the carpenter decided where they went, how deep, and whether the wood could hold. The tool amplified their decisions—good or bad.

AI is the same. It amplifies your thinking. If your thinking is sloppy, the code will be sloppy. At scale. At speed.

We hire thinkers who take ownership. The tool is just the tool.
