Working From Home: Lessons Learned
I have been working 100% remotely since 2018. In fact, I haven’t seen my business partner in person for more than 10 years. Here are some of the things that worked for me.
Wear Work Clothes
It’s tempting to work out of your pajamas or nightwear. This becomes counterproductive really fast. Donning on work clothes effectively signals to my brain it’s time to work, and I can start being productive much more quickly. Non-work clothes, on the other hand, invited procrastination, with me scrambling at the end of the day to get some meaningful work done.
Dedicated Workspace
Don’t work from your bed or your couch. While inviting this is not a productive use of your time. You need a table and a chair at a minimum. A pen and paper would be nice to have. If you have a spare room, turn it into a workspace. If space is at a premium, try your local coffee shop.
Invest in your Work Setup
If you plan to work remotely for an extended period of time, months to years, invest in a good table, chair, monitors, etc. Right now, I have a 6 feet sit-to-stand desk, an ergonomic chair, 2 large monitors, an all-in-one printer, a filing cabinet, and some office supplies handy so that I can increase my productivity.
Have a schedule
Wake up, get ready, start working, and stop working around the same time every day if possible. The freedom of working remotely is that you can choose the work hours. However, consistency and discipline is what’s needed to be productive. Select the time that works for you and stick to it.
These are some of the lessons I have learned over may years of working from home. I hope these tips may come in handy for you too!
